Oakwoods Shop Fittings

Key Benefits

  • Formal training for a managerial role
  • Delivered in the workplace
  • Customised training to suit the business needs

Background

Oakwoods is a privately owned company offering a complete shop fitting service from design to bespoke joinery manufacture and maintenance. Examples of their craftsmanship can be seen throughout the UK and Europe in the retail outlets of high street chains including Next, Hobbs and Mamas & Papas.

Based in Andover, the company has been trading since 1987 and employs around 35 staff. Steven Oliver has worked for Oakwoods for 14 years and started as an apprentice joiner. Having worked his way up, he is now the Assistant Workshop Manager with a team of 8 staff.

Oakwoods believe in giving staff the training they need to ensure a high quality service. Company Director Terry Foley says, “We have always put young people through joinery apprenticeships as it gives them a good formal grounding for our industry. It can be very easy to promote someone who’s showing promise and then they fail. In Steven’s case, we wanted to make sure he had the right training and support, so we suggested an Advanced Apprenticeship in Management.”

PDM were asked to talk through the Apprenticeship training programme. Terry commented, “PDM’s presentation was clear and concise, very easy to understand and we knew exactly what we were going to get. The flexibility of the training programme meant we could choose the modules to best suit our business needs, and the training takes place on our premises avoiding night classes or day release.”

Outcome

Steven is now half way through his Management Apprenticeship. He says, “Not having a management 20120312113100-Steven-Oliver-webpic.jpgbackground, I was unsure about what lay ahead. But I needn’t have worried, my PDM training assessor Julie is brilliant and very supportive, for example when I said that I was slow at typing she suggested I record my assignments. We recorded a question and answer session where I discussed the principles of project management and how it relates to my daily work. Julie uses the recording as evidence in my portfolio which saves me having to labour over a keyboard.”

Julie Davies, PDM Training and Assessment Consultant says, “We aim to be as flexible as possible with learning styles and pace of delivery. The Management Apprenticeship is ideal for anyone who has team responsibilities and is new to management. By investing in training their staff, Oakwoods are ensuring a more productive and efficient workforce.”

Any learning can only be a good thing in life, and this apprenticeship will be good for my future.
