Driver CPC - Certificate of
Professional Competence

PDM delivered in excess of 4000 qualifications to the Transport and Logistics industry in 2008/9
What is Driver CPC?
Driver CPC is for professional PCV and LGV drivers who operate throughout the UK. It has been developed as a requirement of the EU Directive 2003/59, which is designed to improve the knowledge and skills of PCV and LGV drivers during their working life. There are two parts to the legislation:
- The Initial Qualification that must be achieved by new PCV and LGV drivers along with their vocational licence to enable them to use their licence professionally.
- Periodic Training, which involves all professional drivers undertaking 35 hours of training every 5 years.
When will the Driver CPC scheme start?
It has already started! The Driver CPC for PCV drivers was implemented on 10th September 2008, and for LGV drivers it was implemented on 10th September 2009. Both new and existing drivers must complete a total of 35 hours Periodic Training to keep their Driver CPC valid. (This is only required if the driver is using their licence professionally).
NB: Drivers who do not maintain their Driver CPC because they leave the industry, but who want to resume working as a professional driver, must complete 35 hours of periodic training in order to regain their Driver CPC before they can resume working professionally.
What Periodic Training (CPC) courses does PDM deliver?
PDM provides bespoke, JAUPT Accredited CPC training nationally. Currently PDM offers 7 hour courses, each of which are designed to meet specific industry requirements – when there is a specific training requirement PDM can pick and mix elements from its course portfolio or can design a completely new module or course to produce a tailor made training solution – Please call or email PDM if you cannot find the training you require below:

How is the training delivered?
Routinely, courses are run at convenient venues around the country for groups of 10 -15 drivers. In many cases when courses are sponsored by an employer a convenient room on the employer site can be used. All elements of the course are Instructor led utilising approved training methodologies and equipment. PDM aims to be flexible in its approach to training delivery and will work closely with you to ensure the most efficient and effective solution can be found.
PDM has found by experience that many of our clients benefit from combining Periodic CPC with a Level 2 NVQ such as:
- Passenger Carrying Vehicle Driving (PCVD)
- Driving Goods Vehicles (DGV)
- Carry & Deliver Goods (CDG)
- Customer Service (CS)
Where possible PDM delivers these NVQs utilising Learning and Skills Council funding; the advantage of undertaking an NVQ qualification is three fold:
- The drivers receive National certification which recognises their skills
- The fact that Operators have NVQ qualified drivers has frequently allowed them to successfully tender for local government contracts.
- There is also a financial benefit in that if PDM delivers a first NVQ to a driver in PCVD then it can also provide one 7 hour session of CPC free of charge to that driver. If PDM can subsequently deliver a second NVQ in CS then it can deliver a further two 7 hour sessions of CPC free of charge; this really does provide value for money.
If as an employer/operator you prefer to undertake CPC as a separate activity then PDM offers courses for £960 + VAT where up to 12 drivers can attend in a single session (this price can be negotiable depending on minimum numbers of drivers available).
